The “Department of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship” (IUG) at the Alps-Adriatic University of Klagenfurt was established in 1999 as the first university professorship in Austria dealing with entrepreneurship as both research area and education. Our activities focus on innovation management and the management of growth oriented - new ventures and SMEs.
In context of innovation management we mainly focus our activities on:
The ability to innovate and to deal with innovations increases in our opinion significantly the competitive position of firms. By innovating, cost and differentiation advantages can be realized. As a consequence, existing markets can be better served, and new markets entered.
Central themes concerning entrepreneurship are:
Entrepreneurship takes place in the pre-startup, the startup and the early development phase of new ventures. Especially the early stage in new venture development is often characterized by a high degree of innovativeness. Therefore, a number of techniques for innovation management may be applied in the context on new ventures as well. The department of IUG is an important partner for established enterprises, new ventures and nascent entrepreneurs in the region. It closely cooperates with the AplusB incubator build! by fostering entrepreneurship among graduates and coaching individuals before and after new venture creation.
Our activities also involve projects concerning international entrepreneurship. We focus our work on the Alps-Adriatic region and the transition countries in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.
Based on solid theoretical foundation, we centre on quantitative methods. As regards content, aspects of gender and of sustainability are consistently recognized.
In the field of education, we work with our students in the following fields:
The department’s programs of entrepreneurship education (Entrepreneurship Certificate) are suitable not only for students of business management, but also for representatives of other study disciplines, such as cultural or technical sciences.
